12/10/08 [28]: lazy Sunday

I had planned to go for a swim this afternoon, but after a lateish lunch, a trip to Downderry beach to collect pieces of driftwood, a quick geocache on the way home and a lengthy wait for the Torpoint ferry, my initial enthusiasm had waned and I opted to be lazy and take a day off. I’ll be in the pool first thing tomorrow morning and should be able to put in four morning swims in a row so I shouldn’t have any problems completing the 84 lengths I need next week to keep up with schedule. I am actually further ahead now (at the end of the fourth week) than I was at the end of the third week. Here’s the end of Week 4 swim worm:

11/10/08 [27]: classic TV evening

A Saturday afternoon swim today of 30 lengths ahead of a classic TV evening consisting of the England match against Kazakhstan followed by the first live round of X Factor – what more could anyone want eh?!

My swimming seems to be nicely back under control which is a bit of a relief after last weekend’s problems. Hopefully it will stay that way for a bit now. I am three days ahead of schedule and if I can fit a decent session in tomorrow (Sunday) then I should end the fourth week in a very healthy position. 10 minutes to go before kick-off so I’d better finish off and claim my spot on the sofa…

09/10/08 [25]: stolen towel

Another 34 lengths this morning, and by the end of the session I was settled into a really good groove an thinking that I might push on towards the 40 mark and title today’s entry as “feeling groovy”. That was until I came towards the end of my 34th length, glanced sideways and noticed that someone had taken my towel from its hook by the pool… Faced with the challenge of getting dry without a towel I thought I’d better stop swimming straightaway and sort things out. Fortunately, I was able to locate a small hand towel from my bag, but if you have ever tried drying a complete body with a scrap of towel only about 50cm x 40cm in area then you’ll have an idea of how wet I remained even after I was ‘dry’ (if you haven’t ever tried this I don’t particularly recommend it).

On a positive note I am now just over one third of the way through the challenge (4 lengths over to be exact) and I am three days ahead of the required average schedule. I’ve just got to keep going, and going, and going…

08/10/08 [24]: into three figures

% swum:
% days:
totals: 24 days, 442 lengths, 974 lengths to go, £178.00 sponsorship

32 lengths this morning which take my total up to 442 and the remaining number of lengths down below the 1000 mark and into three figures. The next milestone, which I should reach tomorrow will be to get to 472 and be one third of the way through. I’m now swimming quite a bit quicker than I was such that I am quite often not the slowest in the pool any more.

I’m definitely going to put my scrappy swims over the weekend down to general fatigue. It’s odd because after I have swum for several days in succession I don’t feel especially tired but I’m pretty sure that a general tiredness creeps in that needs a day of rest to overcome.

Sponsorship money is creeping up. I set a target total of £500 but this is completely arbitrary so I’m not going to beat myself up if I don’t make it. It is time for me to take a few more steps to encourage sponsorship though…

06/10/08 [22]: changing challenge

% swum:

After yesterday’s struggle, I was hoping that my early morning swim today would see a return to some nice, smooth lengths. Unfortunately, it was still a bit difficult to get coordinated and relaxed but after a while I was able to isolate what I think the problem was (legs) and dragged myself back towards some kind of reliability with my stroke and managed 30 lengths. The whole swim was still rather unsatisfying but it ended up a lot better than yesterday which is something to be thankful for. Perhaps I’m just a bit tired – I noticed a while back that I swam better after a rest from the pool so it will be interesting to see how things go on Wednesday this week (I’m not going to be swimming tomorrow, Tuesday).

I have reached the stage in the overall swim where the challenge has now changed from one of swimming lots of lengths to one of keeping myself going. It should help when I break the 1000-to-go barrier (which should be on Wednesday – only 6 more lengths to go for this) and it’ll be good in a couple of weeks time when I reach halfway, but for now I just have to keep plugging away.
